The political prisoner Julia Gonzalez was
in jail only for not showing sympathy for the Communist regime. In
December 1961 she began to feel afraid because she had a terrible
toothache. She asked for medical assistance to their jailers. They
denied her the permit to go to the infirmary of the facility. Finally
when her fellow inmates revolted because she was not taken to the
dentist they took her to the doctor who extracted a molar from Julia.
She was left in the infirmary because the infection had caused a high fever. She could not stand up. In a week on December 31, 1961, Julia Gonzalez died because the poor medical assistance she received for her septicemia.
