THE STORY OF THE LAWYER EDMUNDA SERRAT BARRIOS MURDERED IN VILLA MARISTA HEADQUARTERS OF THE CUBAN STATE SECURITY POLICE.



The lawyer Edmunda Serrat Barrios opposed the pre potent judicial system of the Cuban Communist regime and was sent to jail as a political prisoner. She went to do forced labor in Granja America a Cuban concentration camp in the Province of Havana. After three years she was released. Edmunda became involved in defending cases against the government.

In one of the cases she was defending, she objected the conduct of the judges and exclaimed the judges were not the G2 and they had to change their attitude. In that instant the members of the Interior Ministry attending the procedure and who were in control of the trial ordered the detention of the defense lawyer Serrat in front of everybody. The State Security Police took her to be interrogated in Villa Marista the State Security Headquarters.

After a few days the dead body of Edmunda Serrat Barrios was given to her family in a state funeral home in a sealed coffin. At all times during the funeral the coffin was under surveillance, so they would not open it. The official version in the dead certificate stated that Edmunda had died of a heart attack. In reality as was described by a State Security policeman who defected is that she had been beaten to death in a jail. Edmunda Serrat Barrios was buried on September 8, 1982.
