Plinio Prieto Ruiz fought with Castro against the dictator Batista and held the rank of Commander of the rebel Army when Batista left the country. He had been an active union organizer and rebelled against the Communists when these began to destroy all the gains of the workers. He went up in the hills again in 1959. He was surrounded in one of his arrays near the town of Cumanayagua and was taken alive to Santa Clara. A summary court sentenced Plinio to death. |

Porfirio Remberto Ramirez was a Captain in Castro's rebel forces until Batista left in 1959. He returned to study in the university and became the president of the Student Federation in the University of Santa Clara. Castro persecuted him because he rejected Communism. He joined the guerrillas and was captured in the town of Cumanayagua. |
